BASICS

CANON.
The Untamed.

CANON POINT.
Shortly after he's been revived in Mo Xuanyu's body. Specifically, after the events of Mo Village and his first run-in with Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling night-hunting. He escapes to reflect by the riverside.

AGE.
Physically, around 25. Mentally, he lived to be in his early twenties, then was dead for about 16 years, though it seems to have done little to mature him.

APPEARANCE.
Wei Wuxian is a Chinese man with slightly above-average height. He's just a shade under 6' tall, and wears his black hair long, but usually has it pulled at lease partially back with red ribbon or red guan accessories. He's almost always wearing black or dark colors with a splash of red.

IN CHARACTER

HISTORY.
  • Wei Wuxian is adopted by the Jiang clan and raised as sibling to Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli.
  • At 16, Wuxian studies with the Lans. He meets Lan Wangji, and forms a friendship. He also meets Wen Ning and Wen Qing, members of the Wen clan. Qing is a doctor, Ning assists her.
  • Wuxian and Wangji find a hidden cave and are tasked by the spirit of a Lan ancestor to find "Yin Iron," a magic metal artifact that's broken into several pieces. She gives them one to help find the rest.
  • Wen clan, the largest and most powerful, already has two large pieces. They are used to control the dead as puppets. The more pieces, the stronger the puppets.
  • Wen clan destroys several other clans and takes members captive including Cheng, Wuxian, Wangji, and their Iron.
  • They are abandoned in a cave with a monster. Wuxian helps the others escape, but he and Wangji are injured. Together they defeat the monster. Wuxian finds a sword stuck inside it with terrible evil power.
  • The Wen clan send soldiers to invade the other clans' towns, claiming jurisdiction over all of them. They destroy any clans that don't fall in line. Jiang clan is wiped out except for Wuxian, Cheng, and Yanli.
  • Cheng ends up caught by the Wens. His golden core (source of his power/magic) is destroyed.
  • Ning and Qing help Wuxian escape and heal their wounds. Cheng is devastated, but Wuxian claims to have a way to restore his golden core.
  • Wuxian lies about taking Cheng to be healed by a sage. He persuades Qing and Ning to use their medical expertise to transplant Wuxian's golden core into Cheng. The surgery is a success. Cheng has no idea who performed the surgery or the sacrifice Wuxian made for him.
  • Wuxian is captured by the Wen clan. They drop him in Burial Mounds to die. It's full of bad spiritual energies. Without his old source of power, Wuxian tries drawing on these darker powers to survive.
  • Wuxian learns Demonic Cultivation(dark magic and necromancy).
  • 3 months later, he returns, killing Wen clan members who hurt him or his family. Wangji advises him to stop using demonic cultivation; it can hurt the heart and mind.
  • To increase his power (to fight the Wens), Wuxian forges an amulet from the iron of the evil sword he found.
  • Wuxian helps defeat the Wens army of close to 3000.
  • The clans start to look at Wuxian with suspicion and jealousy because of his new power.
  • Post-battle, the other clans are still murdering not just soldiers of the Wen clan, but also women, children, and old folks. Qing tells him that Ning, along with other Wens are being oppressed in a camp and held prisoner. He goes with Qing to help them.
  • Ning has been gravely injured. Wuxian uses his dark magic to revive Ning, but he's a mindless berserker. They fight to free the Wens and escape to Burial Mounds. Wangji confronts him as he tries to leave, hoping he'll reconsider.
  • Wuxian starts up a small village in Burial Mounds for Wen survivors. He is vilified and seen as a traitor among the other clans. Wuxian officially breaks ties with Jiang clan to keep them from any retribution.
  • Wangji comes to Burial Mounds. He tells Wuxian news of Jiang Yanli, who is marrying into the Jin clan.
  • A year later, the Jin clan invites Wuxian to a celebration for Yanli and her husband's firstborn.
  • Wuxian journeys with Ning to the celebration, but is attacked. Ning defends Wuxian, but goes into another berserker rage. Many Jin clan members are killed including Yanli's husband.
  • Qing and Ning restrain Wuxian at Burial Mounds and turn themselves in, along with the remaining Wen survivors, and take responsibility for the attack.
  • The clans still want Wuxian's death. He confronts them alone. Yanli shows up to mediate, but she is killed saving Wuxian from an attack.
  • Wuxian breaks the amulet and throws it to the other clans, who fight among themselves for it. Wuxian tries to die by jumping from a cliff's edge. Wangji catches him, but isn't able to prevent his death.
  • 16 years later, Wuxian is summoned into a new body using a sacrificial ritual. He can keep the body as long as he fulfills the former owner's dying wish.
  • He tries to avoid running into his former friends or family, while solving a new mystery that ties into events that led to his death.

PERSONALITY.
Wei Wuxian's most defining feature is his smile. And while it's a physical feature, it really defines him as a person. Whatever his circumstances, he finds reasons to smile. When things are difficult, he rises to the challenge. In hard times, he smiles and laughs and helps others to make it through. He has a bright, warm personality, and tends to make friends quickly.
His greatest wish is to stand for justice and live without regret. As such, he lives by his own set of morals and rules. He hates the idea of rules just for rules' sake and if he doesn't understand why one is in place, he will break it or question it to find out. Because of that, he seems disobedient, crude, or rebellious to those who don't know him well. He will never be bullied and will always stand up for the weak and those in need.
He's a very friendly and positive person, fiercely loyal to those he cares for, but also mischievous. He enjoys teasing and playing pranks, though he generally saves them for the people he feels closest to. He can make light of just about any situation, even when injured or in mortal peril.
Despite all his positivity, he can also be emotionally fragile. Like many comedians, the biggest smile can hide the biggest hurts, and Wei Wuxian is often the first to tears, especially for the sake of others. He will often hide his true feelings behind his smile, and when things take a turn for the Jiang clan, he becomes a bit of an emotional punching bag for his brother Jiang Cheng. He's fairly used to people speaking poorly of him, but he will get furious and defensive if anyone does the same to people he cares about.
Wei Wuxian has a curious spirit and is constantly inventing. He questions not just the rules of society, but the rules of nature, magic, and the world around him, and isn't afraid to try to bend or twist them to his goals or ideas.
The title of the series "The Untamed," is actually in reference to Wei Wuxian and his wild and free attitudes shown throughout. He refuses to quiet or censor himself, he will speak plainly and loudly, even if his opinions or stances are controversial.
Despite his intelligence and skill, Wei Wuxian can be utterly obtuse about emotions and matters of the heart. He will flirt shamelessly, but doesn't recognize it when others flirt back. When he does have feelings for people, he has no idea what to do with them, and when he tries to analyze the emotions of others, he's often completely wrong.
He's good with kids, though that is probably due to his own childlike and carefree nature. Even as an adult, he likes to play and joke and tell stories.
He does have a serious side, though it's not seen as often, and he usually has to be pushed before he'll get to that point. Unlike many politicians and clan leaders who hide behind their words or try to talk around things, he will be blunt and call out injustice where he sees it.

ABILITIES

STRENGTHS.
Physically, at the point in canon I've taken him from Wei Wuxian is slightly weaker than the average man. He can still do sweet flips and jump from roof to roof or fight, but he tires easily. He is trained in sword arts and fist fighting in a few different styles. His archery skill could put Robin Hood to shame. Even without any powers, he can hit five targets simultaneously while blindfolded. He can play the flute, whistle, or a leaf like it's a musical instrument. He's a decent illustrator, and he can drink way more than you'd think for a man his size.
Mentally, Wei Wuxian is a problem solver. He is intelligent and great at solving riddles and puzzles, or finding solutions to difficult situations. He is great at learning new things and picks them up quickly.  He's an inventor with a curious and inquisitive nature.

As for powers, the magic in his world is called Cultivation. Basically, it is an internal magic(a "golden core") or energy that one channels into objects like swords, musical instruments, or talismans. With it, he can do things like use his sword to fly on like a surfboard, send his sword through the air to attack things, channel that energy into strings or ropes for defensive shields or offensive traps.
Talismans act as a set of written instructions for the magic, and can be on anything from paper strips to magic circles on the ground. Their effects tend to be weaker than using magic outright, but actually take less magic to use overall. They tend to be used for things like luring or defending against hostile spirits, minor elemental spells, or Wei Wuxian is fond of animating paper people to do his bidding.

The other type of magic is Demonic Cultivation, which draws on outside forces like anger and resentment rather than inner power. Wei Wuxian uses a flute to channel that power into things like Necromancy/controlling the dead, sending out dark evil shadow creatures, or creating illusions to drive people mad. This type of magic is a lot more wild and dangerous.

One other unclassified powers is Empathy - a power that allows him to be possessed by a spirit and re-live their memories.

WEAKNESSES.
As mentioned, he's physically a little weak. He's something of a glass cannon, where he can hit really hard with his powers, but he tires easily and if he uses them too much he will do internal damage. Especially his darker magic, as it is more wild, it has a tendency to be more difficult to control, and when it's out of control it's a big problem for him and everyone in striking distance. It also carries the risk of poisoning him from within.

Many of his powers carry an inherent risk with use, even the paper talismans, if he does something risky like use his soul to animate them, he will take on any damage the paper person does.

Dogs. Wei Wuxian is deathly afraid of dogs. Doesn't matter how cute or fluffy, he is terrified and will barely be able to function.
Emotions, especially matters of the heart. He doesn't understand them or know what to do with them when he feels them. He has a lot of trouble admitting them, even to himself, and can take a long time to realize that people care.

WHEN: Shortly after arrival

WHERE: Wei Wuxian's Hotel Room

NOTES: [He has no idea how to use a phone]

[The scene is a badly framed close-up of Wei Wuxian's face as he scrutinizes the device. He has no idea it's even recording.]

Hnn... so that's... but how does it...

[He sets it down at an odd angle, and one can see a table absolutely littered with papers and notes with no real semblance of order. He sits in front of the camera again, blank page in hand and starts in with his brush and ink, taking more notes and drawing diagrams that look like the phone settings screens or apps. He's managed to get a smudge of ink across one cheek and the side of his mouth because he keeps setting the end of his brush there as he thinks.]

...what?

[He takes a closer look at the device, realizing it's showing his messy face, and starts trying to use it as a mirror to get the ink off.]

Not again...
